Three Long Hauls

This song is about “road-dogging” it. My friend Cat Robertson described it that way and I thought it was funny… And you know what? Accurate. So I must give credit where credit is due.

The first line is inspired by my grandfather. He used to work off the farm to help pay for the farm. He drove truck a lot. Drive all during the day, get home, do chores, and then get up and do it all over again. And he said, "If I was ever getting tired, I'd take my shoes and socks off and just rest them on the brake and then tickle your feet a little and keep you awake." And so that's a tactic I've implored a time or two while I'm out driving on tour.
 

I wrote this with my friend Murray Pulver in Winnipeg, Canada. I had just finished up touring in Texas and I had this idea of this song, Three Long Hauls. This song is just all about driving.

I've got my friend Noeline Hofmann on harms. And Daniel Kramer on Keys. Just a beautiful band. Our producer Matt Pence did such a beautiful job of capturing it. It's recorded all live-off-the-floor. There's such a freeing experience when it comes to recording in that style. You've got to do a lot of takes, but we got there and I'm so happy with it.​
